** UELN stands for Unique Equine Life Number. A UELN is a Passport Number, but a Passport number is not necessarily a UELN.

A UELN is always 15 digits long and for UK passports will start '826'. The next 3 digits indicate the Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO). e.g. '826004' is the prefix for the BHS. The final 9 digits are the unique identifier for that horse within that organisation. Passports issued in other EU countries will have a different UELN prefix. e.g. '372' for Ireland (inc NI). For a full list see www.ueln.net.

All horse passports issued since 2004 SHOULD have a UELN as its passport number and all passports issued in the EU after July 2009 MUST have a UELN as its passport number, so eventually all passport numbers will be a UELN. All other passports will have a Passport Number. You should NOT just add the prefix of the PIO to a Passport Number as this does not always create a valid UELN - just use the passport number.
